Sitemaps are useful not only to the viewers of your website, but to search engines as well. An XML sitemap is a search engine optimization tool because it allows search engines to see the different pages on your site. A website will only be indexed once the search engine knows it is there. Sitemaps outline the pages of a website, making it easy for search engines to find the site.
XML is coding language that is standard for search engine crawlers to use when indexing websites. By using XML for your outline, you make it easy for web crawlers to find it. This optimizes your website for discovery by search engines.
Without a sitemap, search engines such as Google will have a hard time finding your website. If the search engines can’t find your website, it will not be indexed and will not show up in search results. This is especially true for the many websites that use images or Flash, a non-HTML language. Google indexes your site by reading the code of the webpage to determine if it is good fit for a particular search term. Since Flash does not have HTML code, Google is not able to find it.
Sitemaps are important for website marketing. By displaying the webpages in a format that is easy and quick to find, your website will rapidly move up in search rankings. This increases the chances of end users finding the site, which in turn increases website visits. It will also help Google detect updates to a page. Search engines view frequent updates as a sign of the page’s popularity and will move it even further up the page.Search engine optimization is essential to increase your rankings and draw more viewers to your website. By optimizing your website, you ensure that the search engines can find the pages and place them in user’s search results. One of the best ways to insure your website is found is to create a sitemap. Website marketing, e-commerce, and ad-supported sites all benefit from this practice. There are many tools available on the Internet to assist you in creating sitemaps. Once created, it is easy to submit through Google Webmaster Tools.
Press releases are imperative for a successful website marketing campaign. Putting your company, product and/or service in the media spotlight not only improves your reputation and gives you brand recognition, it improves your website rank and sends more traffic to your website.
I recommend publishing at least 1 press release per month. Every company has something newsworthy to announce. If you need news topic ideas, check out Ideas for Writing a Press Release: 12 News Angle Ideas & A Challenge… by Christine Okelly.
A press release is the single most important off-site marketing tool. However, it will only work if it’s done right. Be willing to spend some extra money. A well written press release will generally cost between $75 and $300. If you select an editor to write for less, it is a good idea to look at writing samples to be sure the quality is excellent.
Writing the Press Release
Your press release should be 400 to 500 words in length. Most people will only read about one-third of the way through your press release, so this is where the most important information should be contained.
Remember, the purpose of your press release is not to sell a product or service; it is to announce a product, service or other information about your company. Every press release should include a quote from a representative of the company. Write the press release first so that you can focus on the message being conveyed. Optimization of the press release should wait until the writing is finished.
Keywords
Pick two keywords or keyword phrases that you want your website to rank for in the search engines. Make sure the keywords that you choose are well optimized by a search engine optimization specialist on the page of the website that will be linked.
Keywords in Title
Use at lease one of the two keywords in your title. For example, if one of your keyword phrases is “sporting goods” your title may be something like this: “ABC Company Opens New Sporting Goods Store in Denver.”
Keywords in Body
Use each of the two keywords at least three times or one time for every one hundred words throughout the press release. As a general rule, the proximity of each keyword should be spaced evenly. For example, if you have a 400 word press release, do not mention “sporting goods” more than once or twice in the same paragraph. Instead, try to use each of your keyword phrases approximately once in each paragraph.
Link Keywords
Link your first keyword. Take one of your keywords from the first paragraph and create a hyperlink pointing to the appropriate page of your website. Again, it is very important to make sure the keyword is well optimized on the page that is being linked.
Link your second keyword or keyword phrase in the middle of the press release or the third paragraph. Do not point this link to the same page on your website as you did the first keyword. Google will only index the first keyword of redundant URL’s, so be sure to point this link to a different page that is well optimized for the keyword.
Some experts will tell you it is okay to use three hyperlinks in a press release. Although I have done this many times myself, I do not recommend it. Using three hyperlinks may result in fewer media and bloggers re-posting your content.
Distribution
Find a great newswire distribution company. I generally use Vocus (PRWEB) or PRNewswire. It will cost between $200 and $1,000 to send out one press release, but it is well worth it. You will find your release published on news websites across the country.
There may be a few free distribution channels out there which are good, but as the popular saying goes “you get what you pay for.” I welcome comments from people who have used free PR distribution companies. I would like to know what your experience has been.
Keywords in URL
Some news distribution companies will allow you to edit the URL to include two keywords. For example, it will look something like this one I published for one of my clients who has a DJ business: http://www.prweb.com/releases/colorado/dj/prweb9039833.htm. Using the keywords within the URL will help your target market and media find your press release.
Images
Be sure to add at least one image or logo to the body of the press release. Images increase exposure.
Social Media
After the news release is distributed, be sure to push it out to the primary social media channels, such as: Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Some newswires will send out your release to these social media networks for you, but there is often an additional charge for this service.
Wait to Publish
Wait to add the release to your website. One of the biggest mistakes people make is posting the press release to their own site first and then sending the release to a newswire. Always add the press release to your company website, but wait until about one week after it has been released to the newswire for full syndication. This will give you credit (link juice) for all of the backlinks, meaning links from other sites pointing to your site.
Any website can obtain 1st page placement in Google IF the website has been properly optimized. After on-page optimization is complete, high rank can be achieved within two to six months for most keywords with search engine marketing. The ultimate goal is to generate content containing links pointing to your website.
Here are the three most powerful techniques to get first page placement of your website.
1. Press Releases
Regardless of what product or service you offer, you have newsworthy information to share. It could be a new hire, a new supplier you have partnered with, record breaking growth, a celebration of your company anniversary, etc. You may think no one cares what’s going on in your company, but the truth is that millions of bloggers want to be the first to post this information to their blog.
Why would someone want to blog about you or your company? Adding fresh content about various subjects will bring traffic to their blog, and traffic will bring advertisers. You may also be surprised at how many news websites post your press release. Be sure to include no more than two keyword hyperlinks in your press release that point to the appropriate page on your site.
The title of your press release should contain at least on of your keywords, and your keywords should be used at least 3 times throughout the press release. There should be 2 hyperlinked keywords in your press release pointing to the proper page of your site. These links will create backlinks to your site which is what really helps your website rank for your choice keywords.
2. On-site Blog
If you don’t have a WordPress blog, get one today. In my opinion, WordPress is one of the more search engine friendly options out there and it’s easy to set up and manage. I recommend using SEO Smart Links, which is a plug-in for WordPress that automatically links your mention of certain keywords to the appropriate page of your website. This will drive more traffic to those pages and help your keyword ranking.
It’s best to write one blog article per day if you have time, but write at least one per week. Don’t worry as much about the frequency of your posts. You should be more concerned about the quality. Google loves fresh content, but what you have to offer is much more important. If you post well written information that people find useful, you will attract readers. For example, in my nine years of doing SEO, I know without a doubt what will make a website rank well. I’m writing this article because I know how valuable the information is, and this article will likely be read by thousands of readers.
A blog allows you to become an authority or leader in your industry, but only if you see yourself in this capacity. No one will follow you if they see a lack of confidence or credibility in the information you share. Be accurate and confident, but don’t be cocky. Not only will you have a following, people will begin linking to you and sharing snippets of your content on their blog.
3. Off-site Articles
Similar to a press release, a good 300-400 word article posted on other websites and blogs is extremely valuable to your site as long as the article includes at least one link or as many as two links total pointing to your site. With these articles, the content quality is important but not as important as your blog. The reason is that everything written in your blog is a direct reflection of you and your company but most importantly it affects your pagerank from Google.
There are many more aspects to consider with links coming from off-site articles, such as, domain authority and number of links shared with other sites. The key with off-site articles is to stay away from spammy sites that link to gambling, porn, etc. Avoid sites that link out to more than five websites from their homepage or sites that have “links, sponsors, advertisers” as sidebar headers on the site. Stay away from article directories as they don’t offer any value. There are a few good article networks where hundreds of bloggers will bid on your job. For $10 to $20 they will write and post a decent article about your topic. I recommend submitting about one article per week.
Some Final Thoughts
Stay away from offers for mass submission of anything. I received an email recently offering to submit my site to 500,000 search engines. You should only be concerned with inclusion of a handful of search engines, such as, Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask, and AOL, and these can be submitted manually. I routinely receive email offers to instantly obtain hundreds of high pagerank backlinks. Run away from these offers as fast as you can even if they are free. They will get your site penalized. Website marketing has to be done with manually submitted content to be natural and to be effective.
